Happy Halloween!

Posted on October 31, 2006

Just thought I’d wish you a happy Halloween, wherever you are. May your baskets be full of candy and may the treats outweigh the tricks.

For those of you honoring the Crone Goddess today, happy Samhaim!

7am Chop Session

Posted on October 31, 2006

Once again I hit the beach around sunrise…. well a little later than sunrise but you get the idea. Onshore winds of 15 to 20 mph generated some pretty good wind chop for Delray. A lot of mushy peaks but once you caught the right spot you were in for a treat. Chest to shoulder high drops and if you were lucky it’d line up for at least a turn or two. I ate it pretty hard on a couple drops but recovered with a grin and paddled back out for more. Dan joined me around 7:30 so it was good to surf with one of my bros. As usual with early weekday sessions I had to cut out around 8 and head to the office.

Morning surf sessions are a must when it gets dark around 5:30 or 6. Guess I’d better get used to it.

Moonfest in West Palm Beach

Posted on October 30, 2006

West Palm Beach plays host to one of the biggest Halloween parties in South Florida. Saturday night Clematis Street in West Palm was alive with the walking dead, over-sized bananas, hookers, playboy bunnies, movie stars and living puns. It was a lot of fun except O’Shea’s, a small Irish Pub where we made the mistake of walking in searching for a beer and a restroom. Holy hell people, learn how to bartend! I stood there for a half an hour before I finally couldn’t take it any more. I’ve never seen anyone behind the bar move so slow and it wasn’t like I was in line behind a ton of people, I was against the bar. Retards.

Once we split from there we found a small dive bar about 4 doors down and grabbed a beer (or three) with no problem. No lines, no wait for the bathroom….awesome. The streets were full of food vendors and live music. Katherine kept looking for girls with her costume for picture opportunities. We found 4! There was one guy with my costume on except he had “Home Wrecker” written on the back of his wife-beater so everywhere I went, I was heckled, “hey home wrecker!”.

Once 1am hit and the official festivities where over we found a place called the “Underground”, a basement bar we kind of stumbled into. Katherine thought the girl at the door behind the velvet ropes was cute so we went to get a photo and got invited in. Nice.

Aside from the initial beer hunt and debacle we had a great time. We were definitely feeling that one the next day.

I tried to take as many pictures as I could of the costumes and nightlife. Click the image above to see the evidence. Sorry the first few are a bit fuzzy. My camera was not cooperating very well.

Saturday Surf Session

Posted on October 29, 2006

9am and the phone was ringing with the sound of “surf’s up” and I was out of bed and running. I met Dan in Delray and it was chilly, rainy and glassy. Sweet! The only problem was every wave that came in was right. Geez, every one of em’. Now I know how you regular-footed surfers out there feel, surfing lefts all day long. I got pretty used to going backside by mid-day. The wind changed direction and kicked up around noon to mainly out of the south with a slight offshore direction which meant two things; open faces on the larger sets and that the magic wouldn’t last much longer. On the lower tide most sets coming in were chest high or better but by the time the tide filled in everyone was scrambling for scraps.

The crowd wasn’t too bad as I found a sweet sandbar about a quarter mile south of the normal S4 pack. Surfed that with a pretty good northern drift all day until my arms felt like Jell-O and the shoulder began bugging me again.

Friday night’s session at the Dunes was pretty good as well. Lefts and rights but without the good sandbar a lot of the waves were too mushy. Still, the longboard ruled the day. Love that thing!

Halloween’s Almost Here

Posted on October 27, 2006

And the anxiety begins early this year. What to be, what to be. Katherine’s already got her costume picked out and I think I’m going to be in trouble with that one. It looks like we’re going to hit Clematis in Palm Beach this weekend for the celebration of dressing up like idiots and getting smashed. For some reason Halloween has always been a half-hearted holiday for me ever since the “mummy” costume that went horribly wrong in junior high and left me sitting in the corner, embarrassed and in long underwear for the rest of the night. Ah, the memories.

The only thing I can come up with for Halloween is possibly a construction worker… and evil scary construction worker. Ok, maybe not that scary.
