Hanna Surf Recap

Posted on September 8, 2008

Friday’s day off was phenomenal. I met the boys down in Delray around 8am and we hit it from there. 5-6 ft on most sets on the outside and it was longboard heaven. Ramil and I surfed for about five and a half hours, most of which was rainy but extremely fun. Two 20 minute breaks for parking meters and granola/gatoraid refuels and we were golden. Easily some of the best surf I’ve had in a very long time and well worth the day off work.

Unfortunately Dan didn’t get much sleep the night before because of his new addition (baby) so he had to split about two hours into the session and go home to sleep. Poor guy, he missed some great waves. Pat joined us around 1:30pm and stayed out after both Ramil and had no strength left to paddle back out.

The entire day had offshores so as you can tell from the photo, the faces were spraying all day. The swell did die down quite a bit as the day went on and by 3 it was fairly inconsistent and long waits between sets but most of us who’d been out earlier were pretty beat anyway.

One sad note on the day – one surfer drowned. I’m not sure if I knew him or even saw him but regardless, I’m sure he will be missed. My thought’s go out to his friends and family.

Surfer drowns off Delray Beach

DELRAY BEACH, Fla. — Authorities say a surfer drowned off the coast of Delray Beach.

Police are not sure how the surfer drowned Friday but they don’t think the current or undertow played a part.

Authorities didn’t identify the man but said he was in his mid-20s. He was one of about 30 surfers taking advantage of the waves caused by Tropical Storm Hanna.

Hanna: Hell Yeah

Posted on September 4, 2008

Tropical storm Hanna is doing exactly what we wanted it to do, just skirt the coast and push swell our way. Friday’s Surfline forecast is 3-6 ft + so it looks like it’s going to be a good Friday of surf. Looks like the swell’s set to drop off on Sunday and late Saturday but Friday’s still looking strong.

Pack those boards up, fill the cooler and stock up on sunblock. Let’s hit the beach!

Hanna’s Storm Track

Tropical Storm Hanna's projected Path

South Florida surfers are all keeping a very close eye on this one. So far the track looks pretty good and it’s just going to graze the coast. Surf should arrive just before and days after she gives us the little love nudge. Surfline’s calling for 5-8 ft. surf on Thursday night though it may be unrideable and blown out depending on Hanna’s location at the time. Friday looks to be the day so far so I’ve already put in a request for the day off. Now I’m just hoping she stays on track and I get the OK from Bill to spend the day in the water.

Solid Surf

Posted on September 2, 2008

After and entire weekend of choppy blown out surf conditions we finally got a day of solid surf. I managed to head down to Delray, my favorite surf break, and surf for about 3 hours with my bros Ramil and Pat. Easily 5 foot or more on some sets on the outside. First wave I paddled for pretty much handed me my ass and pitched me over the lip before rolling me like a ragdoll and testing my breath holding abilities. It was all good fun anyway, a pretty good wake up call to pay attention and a definite sign I haven’t been surfing in a while.

After three hours none of us had the energy to get the longboards out through the break. Shoulders tweaked, sunburn and grinning from ear to ear. I miss surfing with my boys down there.

Of course I had to stop off at Hurricane’s for my post Delray surf beer before heading home for Chad’s birthday cook out. Happy birthday big guy.
