Transportation Plans

Posted on June 30, 2009

Well, as some of you are aware I’m about to be “without car” pretty soon. I made a call to Nissan about my Pathfinder lease and I found out my lease isn’t up until November (instead of August) so that’s a good thing. The problem is in the current economy I really can’t afford to get myself into another lease and I’m not about to buy a car/suv outright right now. So, what’s the plan?

I think (Mom, please don’t cringe too much) I may just try and find a motorcycle and get my license. I rarely drive anywhere and they don’t cost nearly as much as a car or a used Jeep. I won’t really be able to ride in the rain, or I’m sure I probably won’t do too much rain travel, and as long as I stay pretty much local it won’t be an issue. I won’t be able to haul my surfboard to the beach so that’s a problem but the thrill of having a bike may be just enough to get moving in that direction.

I’m not looking for a powerhouse of a bike or something out of my skill range. Probably a small 650 or something, like a little sport bike. Not too big so I can handle it.

Now it’s just a matter of coughing up the $300 for the classes and finding a bike in the 3k range but in the long run I’m sure it’ll be worth it. Cheap gas, cheap transportation though I’m not sure what it would cost to insure it. I guess that’s one more thing I’ll have to look into. At least it’s something I can just pay cash for and not have a car payment. I’m so sick of having to pay for a car/vehicle I rarely use.

Transformers – Revenge of the Fallen

I had a chance last night to hit the movies and catch the new Transformers Movie and to be honest with you it was a bit of a let down. Could have been my mood too, I guess. One screaming baby and a couple of “won’t shut up” teenagers behind me.

But it was entertaining. The action was amazing and of course, so where the special effects but the storyline and a couple new characters made me feel like I was watching a cartoon, not a movie…and could Micheal Bay bay blow up more stuff [sarcasm]. The primary cast was pretty good but a couple just got on my nerves (like the main character’s parents).

Overall it was pretty good and I may add it to the library just to add one to the set. Bringing back the ancient JetFire was badass even though it didn’t follow his original story line (from the cartoon). Also, Meghan Fox was stunning as usual so at least there was something sexy to look at.

Now if only we could keep people from bringing babies to the movie theater. Who’s bright idea was that anyway?

Change…

Posted on June 22, 2009

In a Blind Melon mood today. This song always got me through tough times and I’m really feeling it today…

I don’t feel the suns comin out today
Its staying in, its gonna find another way.
As I sit here in this misery, I don’t
Think Ill ever see the sun from here.
And oh as I fade away,
They’ll all look at me and say, and they’ll say,
Hey look at him! Ill never live that way.
But that’s okay
They’re just afraid to change.
When you feel your life aint worth living
You’ve got to stand up and
Take a look around you then a look way up to the sky.
And when your deepest thoughts are broken,
Keep on dreaming boy, cause when you stop dreamin’ its time to die.
And as we all play parts of tomorrow,
Some ways will work and other ways well play.
But I know we all cant stay here forever,
So I want to write my words on the face of today.
And then they’ll paint it
And oh as I fade away,
They’ll all look at me and they’ll say,
Hey look at him and where he is these days.
When life is hard, you have to change.

Up (very) Early

Not sure why, probably stress, but I haven’t been getting the best night’s sleep lately. This morning I woke up around 5:30am so I guess I’m up to get some things done. For some reason my neck’s been really bothering me, maybe I need some new pillows…or I need to stop spending my Sunday afternoons on the couch. Not sure which.

Regardless, now with no 9-5 job I can get up early or stay up late with the option to take a nap midway through the day so I guess in that respect I’m lucky.

One thing that does have my concern as of late is my car lease which is up sometime in August. To most this would be an exciting time, time to get a new car but with everything that’s going on I doubt that’s going to be possible. As it stands now it looks like I’ll be humping it on foot for a few months till I can get some money together for a used Jeep or something (maybe a motorcycle, haha) but in any case it’ll have to be something I can afford outright.

I really hate moving backwards in life but sometimes you have to take a step back in order to move forward in a positive light. Where I live there’s really no other reason to have a car except for hitting the beach or possible job opportunities. And there in lies the rub.

My current lease is a 3 year, 36,000 mile lease and I’m only just above 24,000 right now. That should tell you have much I’ve actually used my Pathfinder in the last three years. I’d consider buying it outright but I really doubt I can afford it right now. At the very least I can probably save about $565 a month for a few months.

I doubt the motorcycle thing’s going to happen but I’ll keep my eye out for just about anything. Anything but a scooter, not sure I could pull that one off without looking a little fruity.

So How Bad Is It? Yeah, It’s Pretty Bad

I’m talking of course about the current economic situation. Just to give you an example of just how bad it is, my entire family is laid off. How’s that grab you?

My Mom was laid off a few months ago, stepfather as well. My twin sister and step brother are also both back in the job hunting market and of course, yours truly has been laid off since mid May. That’s pretty damn bad. Thanks AIG!

About the only bright spot lately is my gracious landlord agreed to lower my rent a couple hundred dollars during this time of turmoil. Thank you so much Audry, you have no idea how much I appreciate it. It was extremely tough to ask but I’m so thankful you understand.

Well, at least it’s Friday – so we got that going for us.
