We Had Surf…Now I’m Paying For It

Saturday morning I headed out to Palm Beach with my neighbor Bryan and his brother. Solid North East swell and clean. Most were in the waist to chest high range. The sets were a little bouncy but it was lining up perfectly. A couple key peaks were outstanding but after a full day of surfing I seem to have tweaked the hell out of my back. Now I can barely sit anywhere for a long period of time and I can hardly move. So much pain in my lower back I can’t stand it. I have a small fracture in my L4 vertebrae that’ll never heal and from time to time my back just spasms out.
So for now it’s Alieve, which isn’t helping too much and ice packs. Man it sucks getting old. I’m sure it’ll pass in a few days but until then I’ll just have to deal with the pain.
We Had Surf!

Saturday was a rough morning but we made it happen. Ramil, Spencer and I packed it up and headed north for Ft. Peirce. It’s only about an hour or so north of my house here in West Palm but it was well worth it.
Most sets were right around 4-5 ft but almost all of them were closeout sets so all you got was a good drop, maybe one turn before it completely imploded on you. It was fun as hell though just to get in the water and take a beating like that.
The crowd was typical Ft. Peirce. I thought it was going to be more of a zoo than it was which was good. Still quite crowded but you could find a spot. We did have a couple injuries during the day. Ramil’s foot was messed up and he had to cut his day short. I took a chunk out of my calf with one of my fins and had a gnarly wipeout and was smacked in the back of the other calf so hard I had a non-stop charley horse. Ouch.
Overall it was a great trip. A few hours of surf does a body good.
This Looks Promising – Hurricane Bill

I know most people are usually up in arms when it comes to hurricanes around here but surfers are not. This looks like it’ll be the perfect storm for us South Florida surfers. It’s been a doldrum of surf over the past few months. Yeah, I said “months”, which as of a few years ago, unheard of. It seems like just 3-4 years ago I’d still be able to surf at least once a week during the summer but this summer has been really vacant of that much needed surf outlet.
Hopefully it comes a bit closer than the projected path, but not too much closer. At that range it’ll send some nice solid swell our direction without any damage.
So bring it on Bill. Give me a good excuse to put a fresh layer of wax on the board and get down to the beach. Keep your eye on the stormtracks and weather reports, this looks promising.

We “almost” had surf over the weekend. Not here, mind you…up in Juno, but even that didn’t pan out the way we’d all hoped. Yup, it’s the typical summer “Lake Atlantic” summer doldrums. It’s getting so hot outside doing anything aside from lounging in the pool requires you to sweat your ass off.
Yesterday Vince and I hit the driving range for about an hour (tops) and wow was it hot. Of course my golf swing has once again gotten rusty and my dumb ass grabbed the wrong clubs out of my closet. I unfortunately grabbed my old crappy ones but eh, I don’t think it would have mattered anyway.
Image above is from the Jupiter inlet cam this morning. Hey, looks like someone put a giant “Love” in the sand.
We’ve Got Surf…Sort Of

Yesterday Surfline was calling for 4-5 ft here in West Palm so around 2pm I headed down to Flagpole to check the surf. It looked semi-rideable but definitely not 4-5 ft rideable. It looked as though the wind had really gotten on it and was mushing out.
I had other things to do as well so I didn’t even suit up. Today Jupiter looks like a washing machine and Boca looks rough but rideable though I’m not making a trip that far south to catch a few waves. Gas costs money and I can’t afford to spend anything right now if I don’t have to.
Overall the weather’s got me bummed out a bit.
