Not long ago when my Mom came in to town I took her down to the Old Key Lime House for dinner and I convinced her to try their Key Lime Pie, which they’re pretty famous for. Needless to say we had to visit it once more for another slice of pie before she flew back up to now chilly Ohio.
Ever since then she’s been on the hunt for the recipe, trying various ones and each one not quite measuring up to the one she had down here. “It’s just not quite right” and some “were just aweful”.
So one night Trish and I headed up to Key Lime Pie and got to talking to one of the bartenders (after several tequilla shots) and tipped us off to where we could find the actual recipe or if we could order one and have it sent up north and what that would take. He led us to “Bonapetite Magazine, January 2007 best of” issue but this is nearly, if not impossible to find online. Believe me, I’ve tried.
Two nights ago Trish had had enough and visited some library here in Palm Beach County. Walked in, found the magazine and “made a copy”. She then proceeded to conjure up a key lime pie which she then sent half over to me last night. It’s very close though it looks like the magazine’s recipe varies in one key area.
Mom, this one’s for you. I don’t normally put up recipes as I barely know how to cook. I can make a mean breakfast and steak but that’s about all I’m good for. Here’s the final recipe, exactly as they make it at Old Key Lime House.
